How the NHL trade deadline works

By HockeyDesk · Last updated October 23, 2026

The NHL trade deadline falls in early March, at 3 p.m. ET. It is the last moment a club can trade for the rest of the season: once it passes, no trades are permitted until that club’s season is over, so any help a team wants for a playoff run has to arrive before the clock runs out.

What the deadline actually stops

The deadline is not the end of the regular season or a roster freeze; it is the point after which trades are not allowed. Clubs can still sign free agents from outside the league, recall players from the AHL, place players on waivers and assign them, and move players to and from injured reserve.

What they cannot do is trade a player to another club. That is why the hours before the deadline produce a burst of deals and the days after produce almost none.

Why it matters for the playoffs

Playoff eligibility is set at the deadline. A player has to be on a club's roster by then to appear for that club in the playoffs, so a contender that wants a specific player for a spring run has to complete the trade before 3 p.m. ET that day. A deal agreed after the deadline cannot be registered.

Buyers and sellers

By early March the standings have usually separated the league into three groups:

  • Buyers — clubs in a playoff spot or close to one, trading draft picks and prospects for immediate help.
  • Sellers — clubs out of the race, moving pending free agents rather than losing them for nothing in the summer.
  • Retainers — clubs with cap space that take on part of a contract to make a third team's deal work, usually paid for with a draft pick.

That third role is where salary retention does most of its work.

What happens after the deadline

Roster moves continue, but only the non-trade kind. Injured players come back, prospects are recalled, and clubs shuffle the bottom of the roster. The trade market reopens once a club's season ends.

HockeyDesk's trade tracker records the completed trades with the date, the clubs and the players involved, so a deadline deal can be checked against the day it happened rather than against a summary written months later.
